Obverse description The obverse bears the heading 'Upper New Castle District Loan Company, Canada' in a circular legend surrounding a central vignette of St. George on horseback slaying the dragon, rendered in fine intaglio engraving. Large numeral '10' cornerpieces flank the central design, with a secondary vignette at lower left of a pastoral rural scene and a standing soldier vignette at right. The denomination 'DIX PIASTRES' is printed in a panel at lower left, with manuscript date 'Peterborough, 2 Aug 1836' and handwritten text within the promise-to-pay body.
