The Marshall Islands began issuing commemorative coinage in the late 1980s under a licensing arrangement, producing collector pieces with no genuine circulation role. This Pearl Harbor issue appeared on the 50th anniversary of the attack, part of a broader World War II commemorative series the issuer released throughout the early 1990s.
Nordic Gold — an alloy of copper, aluminum, zinc, and tin developed in the late 1980s — was adopted here before it became widely known as the material for euro-zone lower denominations.
