Nauru's late-period commemorative program produced dozens of small-format gold issues in the 2000s, most struck by external mints on contract and sold directly into the collector market rather than circulated. The island's actual economy had effectively collapsed following the exhaustion of phosphate deposits, leaving the government dependent on licensing its sovereignty for exactly these kinds of revenue-generating numismatic schemes.
The Munich Olympic Stadium connection is purely commemorative — the 1972 Games are more often remembered for the massacre of eleven Israeli athletes and coaches than for the architecture, however celebrated Frei Otto's tensile roof structure remains among engineers.
