Issued to mark the centenary of the National University of Singapore, which traces its founding to the Straits Settlements Medical School established in 1905 — making it the oldest institution of higher learning in Singapore and predating the nation itself by six decades. The university's origins were explicitly colonial and vocational, designed to reduce the cost of importing trained medical personnel from Britain.
The .999 fine specification places this above the more common .925 standard used for most Singaporean commemoratives of the period.
