The Republic of the Marshall Islands issued a sustained run of commemorative coinage through the 1990s, largely targeting the collector market rather than domestic circulation — the islands' functional currency remained the US dollar throughout. Nordic Gold, an alloy of copper, aluminum, zinc, and tin developed by the Swedish company Nordic AB in the late 1980s, was adopted by several non-circulating issuers during this period for its resemblance to gold at a fraction of the cost. The Mustang issue falls squarely within that commercial commemorative wave.
