Obverse description A heraldic eagle displayed with wings spread occupies the central field, its head turned to the left (viewer's right), bearing a vertically striped shield upon its breast. The eagle clutches an olive branch in its right talon and a bundle of arrows in its left, emblematic of peace and war. Thirteen six-pointed stars are arranged in an arc encircling the lower portion of the design, referencing the original states of the Union. The legend CALIFORNIA. arcs along the upper periphery in bold serif capitals. The entire design is framed by a dentilated border.
