Liberia has issued novelty legal-tender coinage under licensing arrangements since the 1990s, with much of the production handled by foreign private mints rather than any Liberian minting facility — the country has no mint of its own. These issues circulate as collectibles by design, never as currency, and are produced almost entirely for the international gift and holiday market.
KM#1009 is catalogued but sparsely documented in terms of actual mintage figures, which is characteristic of this wave of Liberian holiday issues where print-run data was rarely disclosed publicly by the contracting mints.
