Aversbeschreibung The Republic of Palau coat of arms is depicted centrally within a circular recessed field, showing the traditional Palauan shield supported by a native figure, surrounded by a ring of stars. The legend REPUBLIC OF PALAU arcs above the arms, while the series name RAINBOW'S END appears within the lower portion of the shield cartouche, and the denomination 10$ is struck below. A directional road sign in the lower field bears the series motto SADLY EVER AFTER in bold relief. Bare, skeletal tree branches rendered in high relief fill the surrounding field, evoking a dark and foreboding winter atmosphere consistent with the fairy-tale horror theme of the series.

Reversbeschreibung The reverse depicts a harrowing scene from Hans Christian Andersen's tale of the Little Match Girl, rendered in high relief with applied color. A destitute young girl is shown huddled in a wintry street, striking matches against the cold, while in the luminous flame appears the apparition of her deceased grandmother, the sole figure of warmth and love in her life. The shadow of Death looms behind the child, awaiting the moment the last match is extinguished. Rich colorwork contrasts the warmth of the matchlight with the bleak, frozen surroundings. The legend FEAR TALES and the date 2020 appear in the field.

Zusätzliche Informationen

Part of Palau's long-running fairy tale series, this issue draws on Hans Christian Andersen's 1845 story, first published in a Copenhagen periodical alongside two other tales on December 18th of that year. Andersen reportedly based the dying child on his own mother, who had begged on the streets as a girl in Odense.

Palau has used its liberal licensing agreements with foreign mints — primarily the Kremnica and B.H. Mayer facilities — to produce some of the most technically ambitious color-inlay and antique-finish pieces in the modern commemorative market. KM#861 falls squarely in that production lineage.
