Hutt River Province — the self-declared micronation founded by Leonard Casley in Western Australia in 1970 after a dispute with the state government over wheat production quotas — issued a sprawling range of commemorative coinage throughout the 1980s and 1990s, most struck by private mints with no pretense of actual circulation. The Battle of Iwo Jima issue is part of that commemorative flood, timed loosely to the 50th anniversary of the February–March 1945 campaign. Hutt River was formally dissolved in 2020 when Casley, then in his nineties, surrendered the territory rather than face an accumulated tax debt.
