| Beschrijving voorzijde | The obverse carries intaglio-engraved portrait vignettes of Jacques Cartier at the left and Queen Victoria in mourning dress at the right, flanking a central pastoral vignette of a farmer plowing a field. Ornate guilloche underprint panels frame the design, with the bilingual text of the promise to pay rendered in both English and French across the face. The date 2 Janvier 1897 and the imprint of the British American Bank Note Co., Ottawa appear in the lower portion. |

| Beschrijving keerzijde | The reverse is printed in green and centres on a circular vignette of the Quebec City coat of arms as used at the time, set within an elaborate engine-turned guilloche surround. Large numeral 10 counters appear at left and right within ornate lathe-work panels, with the bank title split across the top and bottom of the design. The word TEN is repeated in each of the four corners, and the British American Bank Note Co. imprint appears in small type along the lower border. |

La Banque Nationale was a Quebec-chartered institution with deep roots in the Saint-Lawrence merchant and clerical communities — not to be confused with the later federal Banque Nationale du Canada. By 1897 the bank was navigating the constraints of the Bank Act revision cycle, and this $10 issue came late in its chartered life; the bank would eventually merge with Banque d'Hochelaga in 1924 to form Banque Canadienne Nationale.
The British American Bank Note Company's Ottawa plant produced the bulk of chartered bank paper for Quebec issuers in this period. BABN's engraving quality on this series is considered among their finer commercial work of the 1890s.
