Liberia's use of the Krugerrand name and design format on its own gold issues is a licensing arrangement that has drawn consistent skepticism from serious collectors. South Africa's original Krugerrand, introduced in 1967, was the first modern bullion coin designed specifically for private gold ownership — a direct response to restrictions on gold bar purchases in many Western countries. Liberia's fractional "Krugerrand" issues borrow that commercial reputation wholesale, with the .9999 fineness actually exceeding the original's .9167.
