Occupying the lower half of the design is a detailed relief depiction of the U.S. Navy torpedo boat PT-109, rendered in profile with coloured enamel highlights at the waterline, commemorating Kennedy's wartime command of the vessel. The curved legend along the upper rim reads JOHN F. KENNEDY - 50 YEARS ON COINS - 1964 - 2014, celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the Kennedy half dollar.
