Liberia's practice of licensing its sovereign coinage program to foreign distributors throughout the 1990s produced hundreds of commemorative issues with no connection to the country whatsoever. This piece, honoring the French Formula One driver who spent a decade as one of the sport's most talented nearly-men, was produced for the collector market rather than circulation. Alesi's sole Grand Prix victory came at Montreal in 1995 — the same year this coin was struck — on his thirty-first birthday, in a Ferrari, against a field that included Michael Schumacher.
