Namibia's independence on March 21, 1990 ended over a century of colonial administration — first German, then South African under a League of Nations mandate that Pretoria effectively converted into annexation. The South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO) had fought a 23-year armed struggle before a UN-supervised election in November 1989 delivered the mandate for independence. Sam Nujoma was sworn in as the first president the same day the country's name changed.
The X# prefix in Krause places this issue outside the regular series — likely a pattern or essai struck for the occasion rather than a circulation issue. First-day sovereign coinages of newly independent states frequently exist in ambiguous minting status.
