Additional information

Trinidad and Tobago gained independence from Britain in August 1962, but the commemorative coinage marking that event came in waves across subsequent decades rather than immediately. This 1982 issue falls on the 20th anniversary of independence, part of a broader Caribbean pattern of issuing large-format copper-nickel pieces through the Franklin Mint and similar contractors during the late 1970s and early 1980s — a period when many newly sovereign nations used commemorative programs as modest hard-currency earners. The 28.28g copper-nickel specification was essentially the Commonwealth commemorative house standard of the era, shared across dozens of unrelated issues from Jamaica to Zambia.
