The Royal Canadian Mounted Police was originally founded in 1873 as the North-West Mounted Police, created specifically to assert Canadian federal authority over the newly acquired Rupert's Land territories before American influence — and American whisky traders — could entrench further. The force didn't receive its "Royal" designation until 1904, granted by Edward VII. Invoking George V in a 2020 commemorative is an unusual choice, reaching back nearly a century to a monarch whose reign ended in 1936.
