Beschrijving keerzijde A detailed high-relief engraving of the British Royal Navy battleship HMS Prince of Wales is depicted underway on stylized open seas, occupying the majority of the rhombus-shaped field. The superstructure, gun turrets, and hull are rendered with fine mechanical precision. A small gilt Royal Navy Ensign chip inset appears at the upper portion of the ship's mast area, providing a colorized accent to the otherwise silver composition. The legend HMS PRINCE OF WALES is inscribed in bold italic lettering in the lower left field, with the date 2009 appearing along the lower edge.

Aanvullende informatie

HMS Prince of Wales was sunk on 10 December 1941 by Japanese torpedo bombers off the coast of Malaya — just three days after Pearl Harbor — along with HMS Repulse. The loss of Force Z, as the two-ship squadron was designated, was the first time capital ships were sunk by air power alone while underway and actively maneuvering. Over 840 men went down with both vessels combined. The wreck site was designated a protected war grave under Malaysian law in 2001.
