HMAS Australia was a Royal Australian Navy cruiser with a complicated end: in 1924, following decommissioning, she was scuttled off Sydney Heads as a mark of respect — the only RAN vessel to receive such a ceremonial farewell. Palau has issued naval commemoratives steadily since the 1990s, often targeting the Australian and Pacific collector market with subjects that have no political connection to Palau itself.
KM#369 is part of a broader series. The two-ounce format was chosen to accommodate detailed relief work, though Palau's contracted minting at this period produced inconsistent surface quality across the run.
