Belize achieved independence from Britain in 1981, but this coin predates that transition — issued under the newly established Central Bank of Belize while the territory was still British Honduras in all but name, having only formally adopted the name Belize in 1973. The Central Bank itself was created in 1982, meaning these pieces were actually struck under the authority of the Monetary Authority of Belize, a transitional body set up precisely because full independence was already being negotiated.
The Great Curassow, native to the rainforests of Central America, was facing significant habitat pressure from logging concessions active in Belize during this exact period.
