Liberia's early 2000s commemorative program was among the most commercially aggressive in the world — the country licensed its minting authority extensively to produce coins with essentially no domestic relevance, sold wholesale to European and American collector markets hungry for themed novelty issues. This piece, mourning the retirement of the Luxembourgian franc upon eurozone entry in January 2002, was bought by no Liberian and circulated in none.
The franc had been pegged to the Belgian franc since 1921 under a monetary union that survived two German occupations.
