Liberia's early 2000s commemorative program was notoriously prolific, licensing its sovereign mint authority to produce collector pieces with little connection to the country itself. This coin marks Finland's adoption of the euro in January 2002, when the markka — in circulation since 1860 — was withdrawn from legal tender after 142 years.
The markka had survived two world wars, a civil war, and multiple redenominations. Liberia had nothing to do with any of it.
