Obverse description Dark green intaglio-printed note with an ornate guilloche border framing the entire face. A central oval vignette presents a portrait of Michael Hillegas, first Treasurer of the United States, surrounded by foliate engraving and scroll work. A large golden-orange X underprint appears to the left of center, with the serial number printed twice in the same orange-gold ink, and a decorative Treasury seal at the lower right; the denomination numerals 10 appear in all four corners within circular devices.

Reverse description Printed entirely in a rich orange-gold ink, the reverse carries an elaborate guilloche border with the denomination numeral 10 in each corner. The centre of the note is dominated by a large engraved vignette of the Great Seal of the United States — the eagle within a circular device — surrounded by ornate laurel and scroll work against a finely engine-turned lathe-work background. The issuer and denomination legends are set in bold arched lettering across the upper portion of the design.
