The 1929 Federal Reserve Bank Notes were a temporary fix to a logistics problem, not a policy statement. When the U.S. Treasury standardized all paper currency to the smaller "current size" format that year, the Federal Reserve Banks — rather than the Federal Reserve System centrally — issued these notes as transitional instruments, each one bearing the name and city of the specific issuing bank. The brown seal distinguished them from the green-seal Federal Reserve Notes issued under different statutory authority.
The series ran only through 1933, when the FRBN classification was effectively retired. Notes from lower-volume district banks, particularly Minneapolis and Dallas, are substantially scarcer than New York or Chicago issues.
