The Marshall Islands began issuing brass collector dollars in the early 1990s through a licensing arrangement that had little to do with domestic monetary policy — these pieces were never intended to circulate and were sold directly to collectors via mail-order campaigns marketed heavily in the United States. The F-15 Eagle subject reflects the close military relationship between the islands and the U.S., which has maintained a significant presence in the region since the post-war Pacific trusteeship period.
