The Marshall Islands began issuing commemorative dollar coinage in the late 1980s under legislation that was frankly designed to generate revenue rather than serve any domestic monetary function. These pieces never circulated on the islands. The Elvis issue appeared two decades after his death in 1977, during a period when licensing deals through Elvis Presley Enterprises were generating more annual revenue than Presley earned in his lifetime — EPE was extraordinarily aggressive in approving exactly this kind of product.
KM#365 is one of several Elvis denominations struck for the Marshall Islands series that year.
