Beschrijving voorzijde The crowned coat of arms of Niue occupies the central field, flanked on either side by decorative fern fronds rendered in fine relief. The quartered shield depicts the Southern Cross stars, a vessel under sail, a ceremonial figure, a coconut palm, a sheaf of grain, and crossed hammer and pick. A royal crown surmounts the shield. The legend NIUE arcs along the upper left rim and the date 1992 along the upper right, both in raised Latin characters.

Aanvullende informatie

Niue's early 1990s silver program was essentially a licensing operation — the island nation's coin-issuing authority contracted with outside mints and bullion dealers to produce collector pieces that would never see domestic circulation. The 1992 whale issue belongs to a wave of Pacific-themed environmental coins that flooded the numismatic market following the 1992 Rio Earth Summit, when "conservation coinage" became briefly fashionable among both issuers and collectors.

KM#74 was struck at the Pobjoy Mint in Surrey, which held several Pacific island minting contracts during this period.
