The 1990 issue marks the 150th anniversary of the Treaty of Waitangi, which New Zealand's government designated as a national commemorative year with considerable fanfare — and considerable political friction, given ongoing Māori grievances over treaty interpretation that had intensified sharply through the 1980s. Issuing a commemorative banknote in that climate was a deliberate act of official positioning.
This was among the final productions from Bradbury Wilkinson before the firm was absorbed into De La Rue that same year, ending 134 years as an independent security printer.
