The 1995 Barbadian commemorative gold program targeted the collector market directly, timed to Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother's 95th birthday. Barbados gained independence in 1966 but retained commemorative ties to the Crown, issuing a succession of royal portrait coins through the 1990s that were produced largely for export to British and Commonwealth collectors rather than domestic circulation. The .583 fineness — 14-karat gold — was a deliberate cost compromise to keep the piece accessible at retail without dropping to the silver market.
