Nauru — a phosphate-mining island of roughly 10,000 people with no railway of any kind — issued this coin to commemorate a German steam locomotive. The BR 01 class entered service on Deutsche Reichsbahn in 1926, designed as a fast express passenger engine capable of 130 km/h, and became one of the most celebrated locomotives in German railway history.
Nauru's numismatic program from this period was entirely collector-driven, licensed through external minting agencies with no pretense of domestic circulation.
