The Royal Canadian Mint's licensing arrangement with CBS Consumer Products allowed a run of Star Trek–themed collector issues beginning around 2016, timed loosely to the franchise's 50th anniversary. These were never intended for circulation and were sold directly through the Mint's retail channels at a significant premium over melt value.
Nichelle Nichols, who originated the role of Lieutenant Uhura in 1966, famously credited a personal conversation with Martin Luther King Jr. as the reason she stayed with the series after the first season.
