New Zealand's conservation coinage series has leaned heavily on the country's threatened seabird populations, and the Southern Royal Albatross qualifies — the species breeds almost exclusively on Campbell Island, a subantarctic territory some 700 kilometers south of the New Zealand mainland. Campbell Island was subject to an ambitious rat eradication program completed in 2001, widely cited as the largest successful rodent elimination operation ever conducted on an island, and albatross breeding numbers have measurably recovered since.
The Bounty Islands pairing is geographically curious — the Bounties host no albatross colonies whatsoever, being home instead to fur seals and erect-crested penguins.
