Samuel Morse died in 1872, fifty years before any government thought to put him on a coin. The Solomon Islands, which has no historical connection to Morse whatsoever, has become a prolific issuer of tiny gold pieces bearing foreign historical figures — a revenue model aimed squarely at collector markets rather than circulation.
At 0.5 grams, these are among the smallest gold coins produced by any modern mint.
