Samogitia — the highland region of northwestern Lithuania — maintained one of the longest resistances to Christianization in European history, holding out until the early fifteenth century despite repeated crusading pressure from the Teutonic Knights. This coin is part of Niue's broader series commemorating the historical regions of Lithuania, a program that has drawn on that country's distinctly fragmented medieval political geography to produce a run of small-mintage gold issues marketed heavily to the Lithuanian collector base.
