The "Saint Christopher" here refers not to the Caribbean island but to the third-century martyr whose veneration as patron of travelers made him one of the most widely depicted saints in medieval European coinage and pilgrim badges. Solomon Islands has issued a succession of small-format .9999 gold pieces in recent years under licensing arrangements that have little to do with the islands' own monetary history — these are effectively bullion collectibles produced for the international numismatic market, struck at contracted mints well outside Honiara.
