The Basilica of Sacré-Cœur was built on Montmartre partly as an act of national penance — French Catholics attributed the humiliating defeat in the Franco-Prussian War and the violence of the Paris Commune to moral failure, and construction began in 1875 as a direct consequence of that theology. It wasn't consecrated until 1919, delayed by the First World War.
