The Eastern Caribbean Central Bank issues commemorative gold almost exclusively through the numismatic programs of its eight member territories — Antigua, Dominica, Grenada, St. Kitts, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Anguilla, and Montserrat — rather than for any monetary purpose. The rum runner theme draws directly from the Caribbean's deep entanglement with illicit spirits trade, particularly during U.S. Prohibition, when the region's distillers found American demand an extraordinary windfall and fast boats became a legitimate profession.
Colourised gold of this type is applied after striking, typically via pad printing or resin overlay.
