The Eastern Caribbean Central Bank has issued a recurring series of gold collector pieces drawing on regional history, and the rum-runner theme taps directly into the Caribbean's deep involvement in the illicit spirits trade — particularly during American Prohibition, when island distillers and smugglers supplied a significant portion of the U.S. black market from the 1920s through 1933. Several Eastern Caribbean territories profited substantially from that trade, operating beyond U.S. jurisdiction while their boats ran dark off the Florida coast.
