Part of a broader "Wonders of the World" bullion-adjacent series issued by several Pacific sovereign mints in the mid-2000s, these small-format gold pieces were produced under legal tender authority but sold almost exclusively to the collector market through international distributors. The Solomon Islands issued numerous similar pieces during this period, licensing designs tied to world heritage subjects as a revenue mechanism — the islands have no domestic gold mining tradition and no circulating gold coinage history.
The Colosseum was completed under Emperor Titus in 80 AD, inaugurated with 100 days of games.
