Fiji's commemorative coinage of the 1990s was produced largely under contract through the British Royal Mint and similar facilities, capitalizing on collector demand for Commonwealth silver issues tied to British royal history. The 1838 coronation of Victoria came at a moment when Britain's Pacific influence was still decades from formalizing — Fiji would not become a Crown Colony until 1874, meaning the island group being used to issue this coin had no political relationship with the queen being commemorated at the time of the event itself.
