Issued to mark the Queen Mother's 80th birthday, this was part of a wave of Commonwealth commemoratives produced in 1980 that leaned heavily on Pobjoy Mint in Surrey, which struck the majority of Tuvaluan silver issues during this period. Tuvalu had only gained independence in 1978, making this among the earliest commemorative silver struck under its own authority.
