Tokelau has become a reliable vehicle for the New Zealand Mint's bullion and collector programs, issuing coins under its name with little connection to local monetary use — the territory has no independent currency and operates economically within New Zealand's dollar system. This five-ounce piece appeared in 2023 as part of the wave of posthumous tributes following Elizabeth II's death in September 2022, a period during which dozens of Commonwealth and associated territories rushed commemorative issues to market.
KM#423 is one of several Tokelau entries from this period. The New Zealand Mint holds the production contract.
