The larger bird occupies the upper left, facing right with beak slightly parted, while the second bird perches at lower right, head raised as if calling. The word KOOKABURRA arcs prominently in bold letters along the right periphery, with the inscription 2023 10oz 9999 SILVER running along the upper left field. The Perth Mint's P mintmark appears at lower right, and the engraver's initials WR are incused at the base of the design. |

The 2023 Kookaburra is the first in this long-running bullion series to carry the posthumous effigy of Elizabeth II, following her death in September 2022. The sixth portrait — sculpted by Natasha Ratcliffe — was approved and prepared well before the Queen's death, intended for the 2023 coin year across Commonwealth mints. Perth had less than a production cycle to coordinate the transition across its bullion program.
The Kookaburra series itself dates to 1990, making this the 34th annual release. Each year carries a new reverse design — a requirement that has generated substantial collector demand and secondary market premiums well above melt on earlier low-mintage dates.
