Beschrijving voorzijde The coat of arms of Niue occupies the central field, depicted as a quartered shield surmounted by a St. Edward's Crown. The quarters bear the Southern Cross stars, a sailing vessel, a coconut palm with a shell, and crossed implements, all rendered in high relief against a mirror-polished proof field. The shield is flanked on either side by a sprig of silver fern, the national emblem of New Zealand. The legend 'NIUE' arcs along the upper left and '2002' along the upper right of the field.

Aanvullende informatie

Niue has long licensed its sovereign coinage authority to third-party minting programs, and this piece is among the earlier examples of that arrangement producing outright pop-culture bullion. The Pokémon franchise was at peak Western saturation in 2002, roughly three years after the U.S. trading card boom caused a nationwide shortage and a Senate hearing on childhood gambling concerns.

Struck under New Zealand's currency administration on Niue's behalf, it carries legal tender status that is largely nominal — no circulation was ever intended or occurred.
