Pfalzgrafenstein, the mid-Rhine toll fortress built by Ludwig IV of Bavaria beginning in 1326, was never taken by military force in its entire history — a fact that informed its UNESCO World Heritage listing alongside the companion castle Gutenfels on the opposite bank. The Solomon Islands issued this miniature gold piece as part of a broader European fortress series, a common commercial minting strategy for sub-gram gold aimed at collectors who cannot justify the premium on heavier bullion.
