Part of a broader "Wonders of the World" bullion series issued by the Solomon Islands during the mid-2000s commodity boom, these fractional gold pieces were produced by a European contractor mint — almost certainly B.H. Mayer's Kunstprägeanstalt in Munich — for collector export rather than domestic circulation. The Solomon Islands monetary authority lent its name and legal tender status to the issue purely as a licensing arrangement.
Petra's inclusion reflects its 2007 selection as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World following a private global poll organized by the New7Wonders Foundation — a result disputed by UNESCO, which declined to endorse the exercise.
