Issued on the fiftieth anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, this piece is one of several gold commemoratives the Solomon Islands produced during the early 1990s targeting the collector market rather than domestic circulation. The islands themselves were a significant theater of the Pacific War — Guadalcanal, part of the Solomons chain, was the site of one of the most brutal Allied campaigns of 1942–43, making the issuer's geography unusually pertinent for a Pearl Harbor commemoration.
