Additional information

Issued to coincide with the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, where rugby sevens made its debut as a full medal sport after a 92-year absence from the Olympic programme. The British Virgin Islands has no mint of its own and commissions these collector pieces through outside facilities — this type was produced for the numismatic market rather than circulation, as BVI coinage almost never enters everyday use given the territory's adoption of the US dollar.
