The upper portion of the shield bears the chemical symbol for phosphorus, while the lower left quadrant depicts a frigate bird above a wave background and the lower right a flowering takamaka branch. The shield is supported by traditional symbols of the tribal chiefs — shark teeth, palm strings, and frigate feathers — and is topped by a ribbon inscribed NAOERO in Latin characters. Nauru's late-2000s gold program produced a run of small-denomination collector issues tied to foreign cultural institutions — an arrangement that had nothing to do with Nauruan history and everything to do with the island's practice of licensing its monetary authority to outside minting operations. The Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg, the referenced institution, is the largest museum of German cultural history in existence, founded in 1852.
The pairing of a Pacific microstate with a Bavarian museum is purely commercial. Nauru had no circulating coinage infrastructure of its own.
