The Piedfort format — double the standard planchet thickness — originated as a French assay tradition dating to the medieval period, used to test die quality before full production runs. Its adoption by modern commemorative programs is largely a Pobjoy innovation for the British Crown dependency market, where the format has been issued since the 1970s. The Ultra High Relief designation here places this among the most technically demanding strikes in Pobjoy's catalog, requiring multiple press applications at lower speeds.
The Mayflower's 1620 departure from Plymouth marked its 400th anniversary in 2020 — a joint commemorative theme shared by both the Royal Mint and several other issuing authorities that year.
