The Piedfort format — double the standard planchet thickness — originated as a French assay tradition dating to the medieval period, used to test die quality before full production runs. Its adoption by modern commemorative programs is largely a Pobjoy innovation for the British Crown dependency market, where the format has been issued since the 1970s. The Mayflower's 1620 departure from Plymouth marked its 400th anniversary in 2020 — a joint commemorative theme shared by both the Royal Mint and several other issuing authorities that year.
